Our Special Shampoo is designed to remove dog allergens that are found in dander and skin flakes in the dog's skin and fur. These allergens are different proteins, and they are present in all dogs to varying degrees. Simply explained, the shampoo has two mechanisms:
1. The special shampoo captures and effectively washes away allergens. Also removes other skin irritants found in the surface layer of the skin, in a very mild way and without irritating the skin.
2. It contains a large number of different skin care ingredients that contribute to moisturizing and conditioning the skin, counteracting fungus and skin irritation, as well as strengthening the skin barrier. This can delay the return of the allergens.
This means that the presence of allergens is reduced both in the dog and in the environment where the dog stays.
We have chosen to make the special shampoo completely unperfumed as perfume can affect both allergic people and irritate the dog's skin.

How often you need to wash the dog to get a good result largely depends on the condition of the dog's skin and how allergic the person is. Immediately after each wash, Allergens from the dog's skin gradually begin to return. How quickly this happens is very individual, but the amount of allergen in the fur and in the surface layer of the skin is usually large again already after about a week.
To keep down the average amount of allergens and at the same time be practical, we recommend washing once every 1-2 weeks. Because the special shampoo is very mild and skin-care, you can use it basically as often as you want. We have followed care dogs who are washed before each patient visit, which happens several times a week, and who have tested excellent skin and fur.

1. Rinse or shower off as much dirt and particles as possible on the dog with clean water.
2. Then take shampoo directly in your hands and massage it into the fur and skin. Alternatively, you can mix shampoo and water in a bowl or mixing bottle (eg a sports drink bottle) which is used to spread the mixture over the coat and then massaged in. In that case, this should be prepared before you start washing the dog. How much shampoo is needed depends on how dirty the dog is and the type of coat. A good benchmark is that the massaged shampoo should lather in the same way as when you wash your own hair.
3. Massage the shampoo or shampoo mixture into the coat and skin thoroughly. You can do this with your hands and/or use a soft sponge and "sponge out" the mixture. In this case, drag the sponge back and forth over the fur so that the shampoo mixture gets into the skin properly. Do this on the entire dog, both on the top and bottom.
4. Then rinse the dog with water. The shampoo is very mild, unperfumed and contains a number of skin care substances that are allowed to remain on the skin and coat after washing. You therefore don't have to be so careful when you rinse out the fur, but "a little residue" of the shampoo can be advantageously left behind.
5. If the dog is dirty or if necessary, wash twice (so-called "double washing").
6. If conditioner is needed, apply Allergenius® Special conditioner. This is advantageously brushed into the coat (read experiences under blogs: Kim Anderson).
7. Dry the dog properly after washing. Always strive to keep the dog's skin clean and normally dry. Wet skin/fur increases the risk of skin conditions.
Try to make laundry a regular, enjoyable experience together.

Allergenius® products reduce the occurrence of allergens on the dog or cat, i.e. the source of the allergens that spread in the environment. Many feel a difference immediately and for others it may take a long time. The effect varies and depends on factors, such as:
1. How allergic the person is.
2. How good the dog's skin is (if the skin is in less than good condition, it normally improves over time with the help of good hygiene and Allergenius® skin care).
3. How much allergen is collected in the environment (sofas, carpets, curtains, etc.) and how well you manage to clean them.
Some people may need a dog-free bedroom as well as an air purifier to feel better and also to wet-dry the home regularly so that allergens in the environment are not stirred up in the air. Please read more about the different tricks Matilda and Stinsen have here .

This is not something that we have tested, but it is highly likely that regular washing helps to also reduce the occurrence of mites. The shampoo is formulated so that you can wash the dog often and that the skin barrier is cared for and strengthened.

Allergenius® Special Shampoo is produced with a balance of carefully selected ingredients where each substance contributes to the whole that gives these desired properties (see the list of contents on the bottle). It is therefore not just a single active substance that gives the product its properties.

Allergenius® special shampoo can be used with advantage on puppies. One of the important features we emphasized is precisely that it should be very gentle on the skin, which enables more frequent washing than with stronger products. It also contains ingredients that contribute to healthier skin and a strong skin barrier, and we've made it completely unscented because perfumes can irritate the skin. Please read about Matilda, who has been using the special shampoo at Stinsen since the first week. You can find the article here .

Yes, it's going great. Allergenius® Cat Special Shampoo reduces the occurrence of allergens and is gentle on the cat's skin and fur. If the cat licks its fur a lot, however, it brings back allergens from the saliva. When the cat's saliva dries, the allergens in the saliva can become airborne, which affects allergic people who inhale them. How hypoallergenic the cat becomes therefore depends on how often you wash, how much the cat licks and how much allergen the cat has in its saliva.

The special balm has a label for dogs only, but it is perfectly fine to use it for cats as well. Many cat owners have used the mousse with good results. A good way is to use a fine cloth to spread the balm on the cat. The spray has a slightly strong jet, so there may be a risk that the cat will be afraid of it.

Bathing in pure fresh water does not remove the special shampoo's skin care effect as long as there are no substances and particles that irritate the skin. However, we recommend regular washing with the special shampoo even during the summer season so that the skin and coat are kept as healthy as possible. If necessary, use the special balm for additional skin care effect. It is important to always dry the dog properly after bathing because damp fur together with heat (and bacteria) is the biggest cause of so-called "hot spots" and skin conditions.

Karolinska Institutet has tested the special shampoo's effect on 21 different dogs, where 53 washings and measurements of allergen before and after washing were carried out. On average, 85% of the allergen disappeared and in some cases more than 97%. The results were presented at EAACI (The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology) on 11–15 June 2016 in Vienna, Austria.

Shampoos and cleaners used on dogs vary greatly in composition. In general, some products (eg certain dermatological ones) are likely to be good, while others are worse. Some products can even damage the skin with increased production of allergens as a result. This can happen, for example, if the grease protection the skin needs to be washed off and thus causes dehydration or if the product contains perfume substances that irritate the skin.
"Cleaning" takes place in most products by dissolving fat so that particles (dirt) bound in the fat are released and can be rinsed away. These particles may in themselves be irritating to the skin.
We work with a very mild form of cleaning so as not to dry out the skin, but have also added an allergen trapping function that effectively removes allergens from the surface layer of the skin. At the same time, we add a large number of different skin care ingredients that help to moisturize and condition the skin, counteract skin irritation and fungus, and strengthen the skin barrier. This, in turn, contributes to the fact that it takes longer for the allergens to return. Allergenius® products are also completely unperfumed to avoid irritating the dog's skin.

Doing a serious comparative study of different existing shampoos would require a lot of dogs to get reliable results and would be incredibly demanding. We have not had the resources to implement this. We are also not aware of any other manufacturer of shampoos or skin care products for dogs or fur animals that have conducted any such studies.
Based on our specialist knowledge, we have focused on developing unique cleaning and skin care products specifically for allergens, where each ingredient is carefully selected based on its well-proven and specific properties. An important part is to enable frequent washing. Therefore, we have worked a lot with both mild surfactants and unique, comprehensive skin care. We have also worked hard to scientifically test that the Special Shampoo has the intended allergen-reducing effect.
Here you will find a number of customer testimonials about the Special shampoo .

The ingredients in the shampoo are well selected to both gently cleanse the skin from allergens and care for the skin and strengthen the skin barrier. We have also chosen to make the shampoo completely unperfumed because some dogs are sensitive to perfumes and fragrances.
The studies that are mainly done on shampoo products are irritation studies and we have done these on people (both ourselves and other people). Human skin is often more sensitive than that of dogs and cats. It is therefore a good approach. In concentrated form, the special shampoo did not cause any visible irritation, which is a very good result.
After that, we have used the shampoo on our own dogs for a long time to ensure that it works as intended. In all studies on dogs, the shampoo has been shown to be both effective in reducing the occurrence of allergens and that the dog's skin and coat have improved. The shampoo has in several cases helped dogs with sensitive and irritated skin, as well as relieved itching in case of allergies.

Many people with allergies have been helped by the special shampoo and some have even been able to stop taking medication thanks to Allergenius. But how quickly and how well the special shampoo works for allergic people depends on several factors. Partly it depends on the dogs' skin and how long you treated them with Allergenius and partly it depends on how severe the allergy is. Sometimes you need to use the special shampoo regularly for a longer period of time in order for the skin to release less allergen. If you are highly allergic, washing and skin care unfortunately do not always help enough.
If you have a non-neutered male dog that has urinated after washing and you meet an allergic person who has a strong allergy to Can f 5 (which is found in just such urine), the allergist can react to urine that has stuck in the fur and that becomes airborne when it dries.

Products in skin care for animals fall under the regulations of the Chemicals Inspectorate. We follow the new labeling rules according to the CLP regulation, which refer to the person who uses the product when it is in concentrated form (ie undiluted). The warning text on the shampoo bottle therefore states, among other things, that you should rinse thoroughly if you get the shampoo in your eyes.
However, the special shampoo is very mild and can be used perfectly on the dog's head and around the eyes. You must of course avoid the dog or yourself getting large amounts of undiluted shampoo directly into the eyes.

Neither soap nor washing-up liquid are suitable as skin care products. Soap is a product normally used for cleaning and floor treatment. It is very basic, often PH 10, which can damage the skin's microclimate and thus reduce its resistance. Both soap and detergent are powerful degreasers. This can dry out the skin and thus damage the skin barrier, with increased occurrence of allergens as a consequence. They are also often heavily perfumed, which in turn can irritate the dog's skin with regular use. Since soap and detergent are not intended for shampooing animals or humans, they also do not contain any specific skin care ingredients that help the skin.

Allergens are proteins that are part of the physiology of all dogs and are found in saliva, skin (and in the urine of non-neutered male dogs only).
Skin: The allergen "leaks out" via dandruff and skin scales. It is these that become airborne and that allergy sufferers react to when they enter the body via the respiratory tract.
Saliva: The only way to avoid these allergens is to avoid being licked by dogs. Read, for example, Tilde Höök's blog post on our website (Allergenius.se). She is allergic to fur animals and trains her dogs not to lick. Also keep in mind that puppies are licked to a great extent by the bitch during the first weeks of life and can therefore have a lot of the bitch's saliva on the fur surface at that time.
Urine: Has only one allergen (Can f 5 which is a prostate protein) and is found in urine only in non-neutered male dogs.
Washing the dog reduces the spread of all allergens that come from the skin, or get stuck in the fur when the dog licks itself, or if the dog splashes urine on itself.

Research has established that hypoallergenic dog breeds are a myth. How allergenic a dog is instead differs much more between different dog individuals. (Read more in the article: Hypoallergenic dog breeds – a myth? )
However, there are other ways to make your dog more hypoallergenic. Allergenius® Dog Special Shampoo is designed to reduce the amount of allergen on the dog while soothing the skin and reducing dandruff formation. More tips on how to make your dog more allergy-friendly can be found here .

There are no dogs that completely lack Can f 1 - Can f 4 and Can f 6. Only Can f 5 is missing, except in non-castrated male dogs. These allergens are proteins that are part of the dogs' physiology .
-
All available research shows that the dog's allergen profile is completely individual and does not depend on dog breed.

During the first weeks of life, the mother licks the puppies regularly. Since there is allergen in the saliva, during that time the puppies may therefore have more allergen on the fur surface than otherwise. People who are allergic to Can f 2 (which is only found in the saliva) can therefore especially feel small puppies. In addition to this, we have not seen any pattern that puppies generally have more or less allergen in their fur/skin than adult dogs, but the presence of allergen is very individual in both the puppies and the adult dogs we tested.
