Allergy-friendly dogs - do they exist and where do we find them?

Allergivänliga hundar - finns de och var hittar vi dem?

Many scientific studies have been conducted to show whether there are hypoallergenic dog breeds. All studies have shown that there are no physiologically and generally more hypoallergenic dog breeds. But there is a greater difference between dog individuals than breeds.

Are there hypoallergenic dogs?

Dogs excrete 6 different important allergens that allergy sufferers primarily rule against. Every allergen (except one) is present in all dogs but is secreted to different extents in different individuals. These are mainly found in the skin and the dog's saliva. The allergen Can f 5 is a prostate protein found only in non-castrated male dogs.

Correspondingly, as an allergy sufferer, you may have disease-causing IgE antibodies against one or more of these allergens and to varying extents. By understanding your own allergy profile, you can therefore look for a more suitable ("matching") dog individual by testing both yourself and dog with Allergenius tests , which gives the opportunity to find a more hypoallergenic dog - just for you.

Experiences from some of those who have used Allergenius tests

We tested our daughter and the entire litter of puppies. Got a great match! Now our dog has been part of the family since then and he will soon be 2 years old. We use shampoo and conditioner from you just in case. Everything works great and we are so grateful, without you we would never have dared to take a chance.

My daughter developed allergy symptoms shortly after we got our puppy. We were worried that she was reacting to the dog and chose to test quickly to be able to relocate the dog before we had time to get too attached to her. It turned out that she was not allergic to the dog, but it was "just" a pollen allergy.

First we tested the female puppies in a Samoyed litter - we knew the risk was lower with girls - but had to say no as they all showed quite high value on CanF1, as we still thought we were fur allergic. Then I overcame the small intestine and we tested ourselves. Then it turned out that we tolerated all dog allergens except CanF5. So now I'm sitting here on the couch with our 10-month-old Samoyed (working from home due to the covid-19 infection). So I have put up with bitches of all breeds throughout my dogless life! We are very happy, I have dreamed of a dog since I was 10 years old, my 18 year old son from the same age. And it's just as lovely as we imagined - despite the mild winter with all that constant floor drying entails. We are very grateful that these tests exist and have recommended them to dog-loving friends! We wouldn't have taken any chances: If we had been allergic to CanF1, we would have continued testing puppies until we found one that was very low on that allergen. Incidentally, we also use your shampoo, and shower our little girl every one or two weeks, although we usually only wash the "undercarriage", because she has long fur and is difficult to get dry, despite good dog hair dryers. But we shower her thoroughly if we are going to meet people with fur allergies.

Care and skin care of hypoallergenic dogs – an important factor

Dogs that are bathed and washed regularly normally release less allergen into the air and environment, unless the shampoo dries out or irritates the skin, which can instead contribute to more allergen. We know through studies that regular washing with Allergenius Special Shampoo reduces the amount of allergen emitted by the dog.

  • A strong skin barrier and calm skin are essential. Care and skin care are therefore important.
  • Diseases such as seborrhea, or skin infections such as wet eczema, deteriorate the skin and cause a greater amount of allergen (dandruff and skin flakes) to be secreted.

The dog's behavior and size

Even the dog's behavior can affect how much allergen is spread in the environment. A very lively and active dog spreads more allergens than one that is calmer. If you raise the dog not to lick people, or keep clear of saliva, is also important. A smaller dog generally emits smaller amounts of allergen than a larger one. In this way, it is possible to influence whether the dogs you come into contact with are more or less hypoallergenic dogs.

How allergenic are puppies?

Are puppies hypoallergenic or not, than adult dogs? Physiologically speaking, there is no difference - there are other factors that determine whether the puppy belongs to the "group" of more hypoallergenic dogs. How much allergen is secreted in puppies also differs between different individuals. But puppies can have higher levels of allergen in their fur as long as the mother licks them, because the allergen is then added to the puppies' fur from the mother's saliva. This normally stops at about 5 weeks of age.
